Sports Entertainment Group Limited (SEG) has completed the acquisition of 100% of MediaWorks, New Zealand’s leading audio business, in a transaction valued at NZD130 million, or approximately AUD107.4 million, on a cash and debt-free basis.
The deal brings together SEG’s established Australian sports media operations with MediaWorks’ portfolio of music and entertainment brands, creating a larger trans-Tasman media group that reaches more than five million listeners across Australia and New Zealand.
With the acquisition now completed, SEG will have a platform to broaden its sports, events and entertainment offering in New Zealand. The company will also be able to draw on MediaWorks’ established audience base, advertiser relationships and technical infrastructure.
SEG CEO Craig Hutchison highlighted the strategic importance of the transaction and its expected commercial opportunities.
“Today marks a landmark moment for Sports Entertainment Group.”
Completing the acquisition of MediaWorks which is New Zealand’s #1 audio business transforms SEG into a truly scaled, trans-Tasman media group reaching more than 5 million listeners across Australia and New Zealand.
“This is exactly the kind of strategically important and value driving transaction we have been building toward,” Hutchison said.
He added that both businesses have entered the first quarter of fiscal year 2027 with strong performance, while discussions around advertiser synergies and digital platform integration are progressing with MediaWorks CEO Wendy Palmer and her leadership team.
MediaWorks brings a broad collection of established audio brands to the combined group, including The Rock, More FM, The Sound, George FM, Mai FM, The Breeze, The Edge, Channel X, Breeze Classic and Humm FM.
Its rova digital platform also provides access to live radio, podcasts and on-demand content, with the platform and its associated brands reaching 2.4 million listeners each week.
Following the acquisition, SEG plans to advance integration between rova and its digital SEN platform. The initiative is expected to support the expansion of digital audio across Australia and New Zealand while creating broader multi-channel advertising opportunities across sport, music and lifestyle content.
The completed transaction marks a significant expansion of SEG’s media footprint and establishes a combined platform spanning sports, audio, entertainment and digital content across the two markets.
