Meta Acquires Moltbook To Advance Agentic AI Ecosystem

Meta, led by Mark Zuckerberg, has acquired AI startup Moltbook, a platform designed to function as a social network for artificial intelligence agents.

Moltbook allows AI agents to interact with one another, share information and coordinate tasks within a digital ecosystem similar to a social media environment. The acquisition forms part of Meta’s broader push to expand its capabilities in advanced artificial intelligence and agent-based technologies.

“The Moltbook team joining MSL opens up new ways for AI agents to work for people and businesses,” said a Meta spokesperson, as reported by Business Insider.

As part of the agreement, Moltbook co-founders Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr will join Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL), where they will contribute to building next-generation AI technologies.

The platform, which launched earlier this year, quickly gained attention for its unique concept. Moltbook enables AI agents to publish posts, communicate with one another and recommend or support content, mirroring human social media interactions. Unlike many AI systems that rely entirely on cloud infrastructure, these agents can operate directly on users’ devices.

Moltbook’s technology also integrates with messaging services such as Discord and Signal. Once connected, AI agents can independently perform digital tasks including responding to messages, organising information or carrying out online activities without continuous human input.

For instance, the bots can generate posts, upload images, write updates or interact with other agents automatically across connected platforms.

“Their approach to connecting agents through an always-on directory is a novel step in a rapidly developing space, and we look forward to working together to bring innovative, secure agentic experiences to everyone,” said Meta’s spokesperson.

The concept behind Moltbook previously drew criticism from Sam Altman, who joked about the platform while discussing AI agents and the acquisition of OpenClaw.

Altman earlier made light of the idea while discussing AI agents and the acquisition of OpenClaw. “Moltbook may be (is a passing fad), but OpenClaw is not,” he said at the time of acquiring OpenClaw.

Interestingly, the technology underlying Moltbook was built using OpenClaw. Recently, OpenAI hired Peter Steinberger, further intensifying competition in the AI agent space.

Meta has been significantly expanding its AI investments in recent years. The company acquired AI startup Manus in December and previously invested $14.3 billion in Scale AI while bringing its CEO on board.

With the Moltbook acquisition, Meta continues to strengthen its position in the rapidly evolving agentic AI ecosystem, focusing on technologies that allow autonomous digital agents to collaborate and perform complex tasks.
