Apple has announced significant leadership changes within its AI organisation. John Giannandrea, Senior Vice President of Machine Learning and AI Strategy, will transition from his current role and serve as an advisor before retiring in spring 2026. Alongside this update, Apple confirmed that leading AI expert Amar Subramanya has joined the company as Vice President of AI, reporting directly to Craig Federighi.
In his new position, Subramanya will oversee key initiatives, including Apple Foundation Models, machine learning research, and AI safety and evaluation. Additional parts of Giannandrea’s team will now align under Sabih Khan and Eddy Cue to streamline operations with corresponding divisions.
Giannandrea, who joined Apple in 2018, has been instrumental in shaping the company’s AI and ML vision—building a top-tier organisation responsible for foundation models, AI infrastructure, Search & Knowledge, and advanced ML research.
Subramanya adds extensive experience to Apple’s leadership bench. Before joining Apple, he served as Corporate Vice President of AI at Microsoft and spent over 16 years at Google, where he most recently led engineering for the Gemini Assistant. His strong background in applied AI and product integration is expected to play a crucial role in advancing Apple’s future AI-driven experiences.
Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, said, “We are thankful for the role John played in building and advancing our AI work, helping Apple continue to innovate and enrich the lives of our users. AI has long been central to Apple’s strategy, and we are pleased to welcome Amar to Craig’s leadership team and to bring his extraordinary AI expertise to Apple. In addition to growing his leadership team and AI responsibilities with Amar’s joining, Craig has been instrumental in driving our AI efforts, including overseeing our work to bring a more personalized Siri to users next year.”
These leadership transitions signal Apple’s strengthened focus on next-generation AI advancements. With Giannandrea’s foundational work, Federighi’s expanded leadership, and Subramanya’s deep technical expertise, Apple is positioned to accelerate the development of intelligent, secure, and personalised AI experiences for users globally.
