Omdia | Global Game Subscriptions Market to Surpass $27 Billion in 2028

According to Omdia’s research, the game subscription market will generate more than $27 billion in revenue by 2028 as it grows in significance and value. $19 billion is anticipated to be spent on game subscriptions in 2024, which would be the second year in a row of double-digit revenue growth after a drop in 2022 due to the pandemic. The recently revised Omdia Game Subscriptions and Cloud Gaming Market Forecast examines the state of game subscriptions globally, encompassing 43 markets.

Game Subscriptions categories

The three main categories of subscriptions are as follows: games library services, which offer a revolving collection of games and are expected to bring in $8 billion by 2024; in-game or single-game subscriptions associated with particular games, which bring in $7.4 billion; and platform access subscriptions, which primarily provide online features and bring in $3 billion. In addition, eight more subcategories, eight businesses, and ten services are included in the forecast. By the end of 2024, there will be 168 million paid game subscriptions worldwide; by 2028, that number is expected to rise to 203 million, or 14% of all gaming-related spending worldwide. In contrast, 14% of all gaming revenue worldwide in 2028 will come from $27 billion spent on subscriptions.

In the games library services market, Microsoft and Sony maintain their leadership position, with 82 million subscriptions between them as of 2024. It is anticipated that cloud gaming, a highly visible segment of the subscription market, will bring in $3.7 billion in 2024 and grow to $5.8 billion by 2028. However, hybrid services like Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, and PlayStation Plus Premium will be the main drivers of this, with cloud-only platforms like Amazon Luna+ taking home a meager 3% of total subscription revenue by 2028.
