Prabhjeet Singh Appointed OpenAI India Managing Director

India is set to play a bigger role in OpenAI’s global expansion with the appointment of Prabhjeet Singh as Managing Director for India. Singh, who recently stepped down as Uber’s Head of India and South Asia after nearly 11 years, will join the AI company in September as its senior-most executive in the country.

In his new position, Singh will report to Kiran Mani, Managing Director for Asia Pacific, and will oversee OpenAI’s business operations in India. His responsibilities will span consumer growth, enterprise adoption, strategic partnerships, regulatory engagement, and overall market expansion.

According to OpenAI, Singh will be responsible for strengthening the company’s presence across consumer and enterprise segments while expanding collaborations with startups, businesses, educational institutions, and public sector organisations.

“Prabhjeet will be OpenAI’s most senior leader in India, with responsibility for our performance across consumer growth, enterprise adoption and partnerships, regulatory engagement and operations,” the company said in a statement.

The appointment highlights India’s growing importance in OpenAI’s global strategy as demand for ChatGPT, enterprise AI solutions, and developer tools continues to rise. The company noted that India ranks among ChatGPT’s largest markets by weekly active users and is also one of its top five markets globally for API usage.

Alongside driving commercial growth, Singh is expected to deepen OpenAI’s engagement with policymakers as discussions around artificial intelligence regulation and data governance continue to evolve in India.

Before joining OpenAI, Singh led Uber’s operations across India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka as President of India and South Asia. During his tenure, the company diversified its mobility offerings by expanding services such as Uber Auto, Uber Moto, and Uber Shuttle, while also advancing electric mobility initiatives and integrating with India’s digital public infrastructure, including the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC).

Prior to Uber, Singh spent several years at McKinsey & Company, where he progressed to the role of Associate Partner, advising organisations on business growth and digital transformation. He is a graduate of IIT Kharagpur and IIM Ahmedabad.

His appointment reflects OpenAI’s broader efforts to strengthen its commercial presence and policy engagement across Asia as competition within the global AI industry continues to intensify.
