Based on reports from the media, Sony Pictures Network India (SPNI) has named Gaurav Banerjee from Disney Star as its new CEO, taking over from NP Singh. Singh announced last week that he was leaving Sony after 25 years of service. At Disney Star, Banerjee oversaw content for Hindi entertainment and Disney+ Hotstar, as well as business operations for Star Bharat, Hindi and English movies, kids and infotainment, and regional (east) channels.
After starting his career at Aaj Tak, Banerjee moved to Star News in 2004 where he worked as a senior producer and prime-time anchor. He made a big move to Star India in 2008, where he oversaw the network’s regional entertainment channels’ content strategy. He was instrumental in the introduction of Star Jalsha in Bengal and Star Pravah in Maharashtra, two new territories.
When he joined Star Plus in 2009 as head of content strategy, his influence only grew. In 2013, he received a promotion to Star Plus general manager. He then took over as head of the Content Studio in 2015, which was another significant turning point in his professional life. In his role as Star Plus’s head of content strategy in 2009, Banerjee played a key role in bringing the channel back to life with hits like Sasural Genda Phool and Diya Aur Baati Hum, which helped Star Plus take the lead again in 2010. In 2013, he received a promotion to Star Plus general manager, and in 2015, he took the helm of the Content Studio. Banerjee received a master’s degree in film and television production from Jamia Milia Islamia University in Delhi, specifically from the Mass Communications Research Centre. He finished his history undergraduate degree at Delhi’s St Stephen’s College.
