OpenAI has confirmed the acquisition of Torch, a healthcare technology startup focused on unifying fragmented patient data, in a deal valued at approximately $100 million in equity. The move aligns with OpenAI’s broader strategy to strengthen its healthcare offerings and further develop ChatGPT Health.
Torch specialises in bringing together disparate medical information—such as lab reports, prescriptions, and clinical visit histories—into a single, structured system optimised for artificial intelligence. As part of the acquisition, Torch’s four-member team will join OpenAI to contribute directly to the evolution of health-focused AI tools.
Established in 2024 by a team with backgrounds in healthcare and artificial intelligence, Torch positioned its platform as a “medical memory for AI,” enabling models to interpret health data more holistically. The technology aggregates information from hospitals, diagnostic labs, and wearable devices, creating a unified context layer for AI-driven insights.
This acquisition follows OpenAI’s recent introduction of ChatGPT Health, which allows users to link medical records and wellness applications to receive more personalised and context-aware health responses. By integrating Torch’s capabilities, OpenAI aims to enhance how ChatGPT Health processes, organises, and responds to sensitive health information.
OpenAI’s expansion into healthcare reflects a broader industry shift, with leading AI companies increasingly developing specialised solutions for sectors such as health and life sciences. Torch’s founders, including Ilya Abyzov and Eugene Huang, shared on social media that joining OpenAI will allow their technology to scale faster and reach a global audience through ChatGPT’s extensive platform.
