Ten years ago, when social media was still in its rebellious teenage phase, and marketing agencies were just starting to figure out this “digital” thing, I stumbled upon a tiny startup that would change my life. Social Panga was just a small setup with a handful of folks, but it was clear that this was a team that was going to shake things up.
Fast forward to today, and we’re a force to be reckoned with – three cities strong, with an international office in Dubai, and a reputation for delivering some of the most innovative integrated campaigns in the industry. I have been grateful to have seen this journey from the start!
In an industry where job-hopping is the norm, and everyone’s chasing the next big salary hike, it’s exciting to build a career spanning almost 9 years in one agency. I know, I know, it sounds crazy. But hear me out.
I’ve seen many agencies within one, thanks to the diverse talent that’s passed through our doors. I’ve learned to seize opportunities, take feedback, and invest in relationships with internal and external stakeholders. And I have had my fair share of failures, but that’s where the real learning happens, right?
Mentorship, industry recognition, and leadership growth have been key to my journey. And having a team that’s got your back in this journey is everything! Validation comes not just from impact but also from happiness. And I have been fortunate to have had both in spades.
So, what’s the secret to building a career that’s more than just a series of job hops? For me, it’s about driving value that goes beyond just impact. It’s about exploring the depths of your craft, building a network that’s more than just connections, and earning recognition that’s not just about accolades. It’s about creating a legacy that’s not just about what you’ve achieved, but about the people you’ve helped along the way.
I strongly believe that more and more people should see the visibility and benefits of staying in one agency for the long term. We should set long tenures as a trend. Many don’t realize the benefits it offers. It allows one to build deep expertise in the company’s operations, develop strong relationships with colleagues, increase chances of promotion, gain greater job security, and potentially earn more value and money. While early jumps in career can bring immediate monetary benefits, you dilute learning and specializations, one identity or sense of belonging, and the added attributed value that we can drive.
What also helps give a perspective in this context is that over time, you get a business visibility into your contribution which helps empower one to have a greater sense of ownership, an entrepreneurial mindset, and the confidence to scale their own worth in the future. This visibility of long-term value, however, is not immediately apparent in the initial few years. This is what I’m rooting for to change.
Additionally, staying with a single agency can provide a sense of stability and continuity, which is invaluable in today’s rapidly evolving business landscape. By building a strong foundation within one organization, you can establish a solid network, contribute to shaping the company’s culture and values, and truly celebrate long-term success together.
Remember, staying with a single agency doesn’t mean you’re emotionally invested or necessarily comfortable. It’s about understanding that with your level of contribution and accountability, you have the power to create meaningful change and visibly see the impact of your work. That impact is far more rewarding than any external recognition.
As I look back on my journey, I realize that the real magic happens when you’re willing to go all-in on your passions, to specialize deeply, detach when needed, and to build relationships that matter. So, don’t just chase the next big thing – create it. Don’t just follow the crowd – lead it. And don’t just build a career – build a legacy that will outlast you.
