Samir Kumar, a 25-year-old veteran of Amazon, will now assume leadership of the e-commerce behemoth’s Indian consumer division. Kumar will take over as the new Country Manager after Manish Tiwary decided to look for a job outside of Amazon. The company update stated that Mr. Kumar is closely collaborating with Manish Tiwary on the transition, and he will take on operational duties for India on October 1. Kumar will continue to be in charge of Amazon’s consumer operations in Turkey, South Africa, and the Middle East in addition to his new position.
Samir Kumar will assume the role of Country Manager for India in addition to his current responsibilities, as announced in an internal email by Amit Agarwal, Amazon’s SVP for Emerging Markets. Kumar, an Amazon employee since 1999, was a member of the original group that designed and initiated Amazon.in in 2013.
Samir will now receive reports from Amazon.in’s leadership team, which consists of Saurabh Srivastava (Categories), Harsh Goyal (Everyday Essentials), Amit Nanda (Marketplace), and Aastha Jain (Growth Initiatives). In addition, Kishore Thota (Emerging Market Shopping Experience) will directly report to Amit Agarwal.
India has proven to be an important market for Amazon, which has led to increased funding in recent years. But in India’s expanding e-commerce market, tier 2-focused Meesho and Walmart-owned Flipkart continue to pose serious competition for Amazon’s India division. The market is currently estimated to be worth $70 billion, and by 2030, it is expected to reach $325 billion due to rising internet usage and smartphone ownership.
Amit Agarwal, SVP for Emerging Markets stated in the company post,
“India remains an important priority for Amazon, and I am super excited about the opportunity ahead as we continue to transform lives and livelihoods. We have a strong local leadership bench and, along with Samir’s experiences across Emerging Markets, I am even more optimistic about our future plans to deliver for customers and the business in India.”
