Cipla has announced a major leadership change, with Umang Vohra stepping down as Managing Director and CEO after a decade-long tenure that shaped the company’s evolution into a future-ready organisation.
During his leadership, Vohra played a pivotal role in expanding Cipla’s global footprint and diversifying its portfolio. Prior to Cipla, he held senior roles at Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, PepsiCo India, and Eicher Ltd.
The company has appointed Achin Gupta as the new Managing Director and Global CEO. Gupta, who has been serving as CEO (Designate) since January 2026, brings strong operational expertise, having previously served as Global COO at Cipla where he oversaw over $3 billion in revenue across commercial operations, supply chain, and manufacturing.
He also led the company’s “One India” business to $1.2 billion in revenue. Before joining Cipla, Gupta spent over eight years at Glenmark Pharmaceuticals in key leadership roles across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America, and earlier held a strategic planning role at Abbott Laboratories. He began his career in consulting at A.T. Kearney.
In a LinkedIn post reflecting on his journey, Vohra said, “A decade ago, when I stepped into this role, Cipla had embarked on a journey to become future-ready. Today, it is humbling to see many of these goals realised while remaining anchored in our core values of care and compassion for our patients.”
He added, “My sincere thanks to the Promoters, the Cipla Board, and every colleague – former and present, for their unwavering trust and the ‘tiki-taka’ spirit of collaboration that allowed us to navigate even the most demanding challenges with collective resilience.”
Reflecting on the organisation’s broader impact, Vohra noted, “Beyond the milestones, I will always carry the memories of our impact on communities and patients, which reminded me daily that our mission of #CaringForLife extends far beyond business.”
Concluding his message, he shared that he would remain an “enduring connection” to the organisation and would be “cheering from afar as Cipla continues to soar to new heights” under Gupta’s leadership.
