INDIA, Mumbai – 9 October 2025: Artificial Intelligence is transforming how people discover, choose, and pay for products and services. Today, India takes a bold step forward as Razorpay, National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), and OpenAI join forces, working towards launching Agentic Payments on ChatGPT and exploring AI-driven commerce at a national scale. Currently in the pilot stage, this will usher in a new era of intelligent, conversational, and seamless digital payments.
The face of online shopping is evolving rapidly. Today, users are already discovering products and services through AI Assistants like ChatGPT, exploring options, comparing prices, planning purchases, and much more, all within a conversational flow. Agentic Payments will bring in a seamless way to complete the transaction without leaving the AI environment.
This initiative combines Razorpay’s innovation in digital finance, NPCI’s trusted UPI infrastructure, which powers over 20 billion transactions each month, and OpenAI’s cutting-edge AI models, which help consumers discover and shop in smarter, more intuitive ways.
Powered by Razorpay’s banking partners, Axis Bank and Airtel Payments Bank, and built on UPI innovations such as UPI Circle and UPI Reserve Pay, the initiative delivers seamless UPI transactions for AI-native shopping. Bigbasket, a tata enterprise, is among the first merchants to allow customers to shop through AI-powered experiences on ChatGPT.
For example, a ChatGPT user can ask, “Help me order ingredients for a Thai-style vegetable curry for 4 people from BigBasket.” The AI agent checks bigbasket’s catalog, presents product options, and, with a single confirmation, places the order via Razorpay’s payments stack. Users retain full control with real-time tracking and instant revocation, ensuring a secure and user-first shopping experience.
As part of this initiative, Razorpay, NPCI, and OpenAI will explore AI-based payment use cases, including personalized and secure AI commerce through conversational shopping and checkout experiences. The effort will evaluate how these innovations can be expanded across new commerce verticals and agentic use cases using UPI, where, in the future, AI agents may be enabled with payment credentials to autonomously complete transactions on behalf of users in a safe, secure, and user-controlled manner.
