OpenAI, the global artificial intelligence research and deployment company and creator of ChatGPT, has appointed Akash Iyer as Social Lead for its India team, marking another key leadership addition to its recently announced OpenAI India office.
“This is a meaningful moment for me: I’m joining OpenAI as Social Lead for the India team.”
“It’s an incredible opportunity. But more than that, it’s a deep responsibility to be able to contribute to the mission of building AGI for the benefit of humanity,” he added.
With this appointment, Iyer becomes one of the first hires at OpenAI India, following the recent onboarding of Pragya Misra as Public Policy and Partnerships Lead. Misra has been leading OpenAI’s policy and partnership initiatives since the company announced its first corporate office in New Delhi, reinforcing its commitment to India’s AI growth story.
Before joining OpenAI, Iyer spent nearly seven years at Netflix India, where he managed social marketing, brand, and editorial strategies for films and series. He has also worked at BuzzFeed India as Senior Producer and Consulting Producer, where he focused on video innovation and audience engagement. Additionally, he held creative leadership roles at Sportskeeda as Head of Video Content and at The Glitch, where he produced shows for MTV.
OpenAI recently announced its first office in India, headquartered in New Delhi, aligning with the Government of India’s IndiaAI mission. The move underscores OpenAI’s vision of building AI “for India, with India.”
As part of its expansion, OpenAI has started hiring for multiple roles in India, including three sales positions, with more listings expected in the future. The company reiterated that the India office will play a vital role in strengthening partnerships, supporting innovation, and contributing to the mission of developing safe and beneficial artificial general intelligence (AGI).
