OpenAI Announces Ads Rollout For Free And Go ChatGPT Users

OpenAI has revealed plans to introduce advertising on ChatGPT, marking a notable change in the platform’s monetisation approach. The ads will be shown to users on the free tier and the USD 8-per-month Go plan, appearing below AI-generated responses.

Subscribers on Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans will continue to enjoy an ad-free experience.

According to reports, OpenAI is pitching advertising inventory at a rate of USD 60 per 1,000 impressions (CPM). This pricing places ChatGPT’s ad offering well above typical social media benchmarks—where average CPMs often fall between USD 10 and USD 20—and aligns it with premium placements such as live sports broadcasts or highly targeted streaming television ads.

In the initial phase, advertisers will receive limited performance insights, including overall impressions and click data. Detailed conversion tracking will not be provided, as OpenAI has reiterated its commitment to user privacy. The company has emphasised that conversations within ChatGPT will not be shared with advertisers, and that personal or health-related data will neither be used for ad targeting nor influence the platform’s responses.

OpenAI has also stated that advertisements will be excluded from sensitive or regulated content areas, including health, mental health, and political topics.

The advertising pilot is expected to begin in the United States in the coming weeks.
